The BMW E23 733i is the first generation of the large luxury sedan line for BMW. It replaced the BMW “New Six” E3 sedans. The E23 introduced many electronic features for the first time in a BMW, including an on-board computer, service interval indicator, a “check control panel” (warning lights to indicate system faults to the driver), a Dictaphone and complex climate control systems. It was also the first BMW to offer an antilock braking system, a driver’s airbag and a new design of front suspension. Options included leather upholstery, wood trim, power seats, seat heaters, reclining rear seats, power windows, and power mirrors.
Don Riehl is the original owner. He purchased the car from Santa Cruz Motors-Mazda BMW in Santa Cruz, California in 1978. It remained in his collection until he donated it to The Ultimate Driving Museum in 2014 located in Greer, South Carolina.
The car was on display from 2014 – 2016 at the Foundation.
BMW NA borrowed this car in 2015 for the G11 7 Series press launch. They wanted an example from each generation on display.
In 2016, Automobile magazine borrowed the car to compare it to a 2016 750i xDrive at the Performance Center. An online story with pictures came out on November 8, 2016. A print copy of Automobile came out in December 2016. Click here for the Automobile Magazine
